ADA Policy
Policy & procedures regarding persons with disabilities & requests for accommodations:
It is the policy of the San Mateo County Superior Court to ensure that qualified persons with disabilities have equal and full access to the judicial system. This policy is in accordance with California Rule of Court 1.100.
Qualified persons with disabilities are persons covered by:
- the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
- the California Unruh Civil Rights Act
- other applicable federal or state laws
This includes individuals who have:
- have a physical or mental medical condition that limits one or more of the major life activities
- have a record of such a condition
- are regarded as having such condition
You can make your request by:
- submitting a Judicial Council of California MC-410 request form to ada@sanmateocourt.org
- emailing ada@sanmateocourt.org
- mailing a letter to the Court’s Communications Officer (see contact information below)
- making a verbal request to the Court’s Communications Officer (see contact information below)
Requests for accommodations:
- must include a description of the accommodation sought with a statement of the medical condition that necessitates the accommodation
- must be made as far in advance as possible, and must be made no fewer than 5 court days before the requested implementation date
- must be made for each and every scheduled court appearance
If you need to reschedule or postpone your jury service reporting date, please contact Juror Services at 650-599-1700, or by email: jurymaster@sanmateocourt.org
The Court will give primary consideration to a proposed accommodation. The Court may require an applicant to provide additional information about the medical condition and accommodation sought. The Court may provide an alternative accommodation if determined to be an effective, appropriate aid or service.
The court is not required to make accommodations that would:
- would fundamentally alter the nature of a service, program, or activity
- create an undue financial or administrative burden.
The Court will inform applicants of the determination to grant or deny an accommodation request, in whole or in part, with a confidential letter. Letters will be emailed to applicants unless an alternative form of communication is requested.
