San Mateo County Superior Court Commemorates Juror Appreciation Week, May 12–16

Redwood City, Calif - The San Mateo County Superior Court is excited to celebrate Juror Appreciation Week from May 12 through May 16, honoring the thousands of residents who help to uphold one of our country’s most important and cherished democratic traditions: the right to trial by jury.

First established in 1998 by a resolution of the California Legislature, Juror Appreciation Week shines a spotlight on the citizens whose service make justice possible in our communities. Each year during the second week of May, courts across California recognize jurors’ essential role in the legal system.

Here in San Mateo County, the Court will be saying "thank you" in a variety of fun ways. Jurors called to report during Juror Appreciation Week will be treated to themed crossword and word search puzzles provided by the Judicial Council of California. Jury offices will be decorated with festive banners, and sworn jury panels will receive snack baskets specially assembled by Juror Services.

In 2024 alone, nearly 13,000 San Mateo County residents were asked to report for jury duty, supporting the nearly 70 jury trials held annually. Statewide, more than 4.5 million Californians are asked to report for jury service each year, playing a direct role in the administration of justice across the state.

“The participation of jurors in the jury process is essential to providing justice. I deeply appreciate the value of our jurors to enable our justice system to provide the right to trial by jury, guaranteed by the U.S. and California Constitution, in San Mateo County,” remarked Chad L. Peace, Court Executive Officer and Jury Commissioner. “On behalf of our judiciary and court staff, I want to express my sincerest gratitude for your availability, participation, and service to the San Mateo County community.”

Residents summoned for jury service can check their reporting instructions after 6:00 p.m. the evening before the date of their scheduled service. Reporting details, locations, and times, as well as the option to receive text notifications, are available on the Court’s website. Juror Services can also be reached by phone at 650-599-1700 and by email at JuryMaster@sanmateocourt.org.
